A training session is scheduled for Saturday, March 1st at the North and South Mills River Community Building led by biologist David Dudek.  Volunteers will be trained in water monitoring work while getting a better understanding of how water ecosystems operate.  A special afternoon session will provide a refresher course to current participants.  Refreshments will be available to all.
The Community Building is located 2.5 miles from NC 280 on S Mills River Rd (at the light at the Valley Ag store). If you come to Whitaker road, you've gone too far. Please note: The original directions posted here were incorrect. This is the correct location. If directions were e-mailed to you, they were correct. If you have trouble locating the site, please call Doreen at 551-6985.

If you'd like to learn about the macroinvertebrates that live in healthy streams and discover which streams support those little critters, please consider joining ECO's Biological Monitoring Program as a volunteer.

You'll be assigned to a team which will monitor about four streams in a watershed.  Monitoring is done in April and October.

This project is entering its seventh year, and the data reveals new facts about water quality at certain sites each year. Ten teams -- involving 45 volunteers -- monitor 26 sites.

More volunteers are needed for the program to grow and thrive.  Current volunteers may attend as well.

Supported by a grant from the Helen Tarasov Reed Fund, this successful program serves as a model for other communities.  The training is based on the well-respected Save Our Streams program of the Izaak Walton League of America.

Dress for the weather and bring waterproof boots.

Urban Walk with Walk Wise, Drive Smart
Thursday, March 6, 2008

On the first Thursday of every month, a guided walk will be held in various designated neighborhoods around Hendersonville.  Location and time depends on the weather, guest guides, and the whim of our walkers.  To find out where we'll be, contact the local project manager Sam Lovelace at 864.457.6166, or www.walk-wise.org. Walks are open to everyone.  We invite you to come enjoy some healthy exercise, beautiful neighborhoods, and give us your input on future improvements to walking routes in the Hendersonville area.  Each walk is gentle, between 1 and 2 miles, and usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  Walks are cancelled in the event of severe weather.
