The Airt Quality Committee organized the Clean Air Car Fair for the third year running as part of the Southern Energy and Environment Expo at the WNC Ag Center on the last weekend in August. More than 6,000 people attended, and over 30 alternative fuel and low-emission, fuel-efficient gasoline models were displayed, including five of the seven hybrids available on the market. For the Expo, ECO organized a seminar on alternative fuels in conjunction with the Clean Vehicles Coalition. The Coalition is sponsored by Land Of Sky Regional Council to attain “Clean Cities” status for the region. This committee also sponsored a public information session at Henderson County library on TVA’s air quality programs, with Bill Baxter of the TVA board presenting. The Henderson County Environmental Advisory Committee was a co-sponsor of the program. Our committee continues to encourage local fleet managers to switch to alternative fuel vehicles, and helped Henderson County Schools obtain a $100,000 grant to install diesel oxidizers on all their school buses.
