2014 ECO CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Board meetings are held the 4th Thursday of each month, 3:00 – 4:30pm.
Visitors are welcome at board and committee meetings.

APRIL

All Month: Biomonitoring with ECO! Call (828) 692-0385 to learn more about how aquatic insects tell the story of water quality. New volunteers are welcome to join existing teams and monitor throughout Henderson County.

Tues. 1: Informational and Listening Session 1. Biz611 Conference Room, 611 N. Church St., 6:30pm. (See Page 1- “Special Message from the ECO Board of Directors).

Tues. 8: Annual Kehr Lecture Series. Thomas Auditorium, Blue Ridge Community College, 7-9pm. The 9th Annual BRCC Kehr Lecture presents Chuck Marsh, permaculture instructor, co-founder of Earthaven Econvillage, and founder of Useful Plants Nursery. Reception 6pm; presentation 7pm. Free and open to the public.

Thurs. 24: Candidate Forum. 6:30-9:00pm, City of Hendersonville Operations Center, 305 Williams St. Join ECO’s Green Infrastructure Committee as we invite the candidates running for county commission seats and NC House of Representatives District 117. Meet and greet from 6:30-7:00pm.

Sat. 26: Sustainable Living Workshop: Aquaponics. 3-4:30pm, Asheville Aquaponics, 4021 Haywood Rd., Mills River, NC. Owner Cliff Jagger will teach about this unique, self-sustainable method for growing food using waste from fish to fertilize tiers of aquatic plants. $15 per person, registration required. MAY

Sat. 3: 3rd Annual Earth Stewardship Day. 9am-2pm, throughout Henderson County. Join ECO volunteers as we help create lasting environmental projects throughout the community. This year’s projects include  streambank restoration, clean-up and preparation of spring beds in community gardens, and more! Bring your friends, neighbords, and coworkers. Sat. 17: Sustainable Living Workshop: Creating an Edible Landscape. 10am-12:30pm, on-site location TBA upon registration. Join local permaculture designer Chuck Marsh in an open consultation on transforming a conventional Hendersonville yard into an abundant and thriving edible, energy and water conserving home landscape. Rain or shine. $15 per person, registration required. Call (828) 692-0385 to sign up.

Sat. 31:     Spring Mountain Art Show. 7:00pm, Hi-Art Studio and Gallery, 443 N. Main St., Hendersonville.  Join the Center for Cultural Preservation and ECO to celebrate culture and nature in this art reception featuring local art, music and refreshments. JUNE

Sat. 14: Sustainable Living Workshop: Wild Plant Walk. Time TBD. Outdoor, on-site location TBA upon registration. Taught by local wild edibles expert Michele Skeele. Learn about edible wild plants that grow all around us in our yards, forests, and fields.  Also learn the plants to avoid when foraging. $15 per person, registration required.  Call (828) 692-0385 to sign up.

Sat. 14: Adopt-A-Stream, SWAT Workshop. ECO, Wash Creek, 10am-12pm. Learn about a community-based monitoring program where you will receive both classroom and field experience for identifying stream health and water quality issues.
